Woodstock music festival gathers almost one-half million fans in New York. Who's Pete Townshend uses his guitar to hit yippie leader Abbie Hoffman over the head as Hoffman jumps onstage.

David Dellinger, Rennie Davis, Tom Hayden, Abbie Hoffman, Jerry Rubin, Bobby Seale, John Froines and Lee Weiner are the Chicago Eight (leaders involved in organized demonstrations to end the Vietnam war staged in Chicago). Later Bobby Seale was tried separately because of his outbursts in court. The remaining group is now called the Chicago 7.

U.S. and USSR begin Strategic Arm Limitation Talks (SALT).

"Days of Rage" riots continue for one week in October as the radical group the Weathermen lead thousands of protesters. The Vietnam War, police oppression and the rich are the object of scorn as many were injured throughout the nightly rock-throwing, window-smashing in the Gold Coast and Chicago's Loop. Richard J. Elrod, who later becomes Cook County Sheriff, breaks his neck during a tackle of a fleeing protester. Injuries result in paralysis.

A member of the Black Panthers is invited to speak to a student organization known as the Student Forum, which hosted outside speakers after school in the cafeteria. An Arlington parent phones in the news of the planned visit to the Howard Miller radio show. The news is aired and the switchboard at Arlington High School is busy fielding protests to the visit. Principal Bruno Waara cancels the Black Panther meeting. The next speaker invited is Frank Collins, leader of the American Nazi Party, who shows up at Arlington High School in full Nazi uniform.

Chicago Cubs Billy Williams plays his 895th and 896th consecutive games in seven years to break the 895-game record held by Stan Musial of the St. Louis Cardinals. The record proceeds on to 1,117 games in 1970.
