John Kenneth Sanfillippo Obituary It is with deep sadness that we share that our beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend, John Kenneth Sanfillippo, passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 9th, 2024. John was the first of four sons born to Salvador and Rose Sanfillippo on August 17th, 1955 in Chicago, IL. He graduated from Wheeling High School, and went on to attend Eastern Illinois University and DePaul University where he received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees, respectively. Upon graduating, John pursued his passion of teaching and spent 35 years working as a mathematics and business teacher beginning at Arlington High School and then spending the majority of his career at Schaumburg High School. He worked as a substitute teacher upon retirement, as he always enjoyed being back in the classroom. He was a beloved teacher, colleague, and coach who made a lasting impact on staff and students alike. John met the love of his life, Diane (Kogler) Sanfillippo, at Eastern Illinois University. They married in 1978. Their 45 years of marriage were spent gardening, traveling, and creating lasting memories together with their four loving children. John and Diane faithfully attended and served at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Schaumburg, IL, where John was an Elder and Communion Assistant for many years. As a family man first and foremost, John was the proud father of Janelle (Bradley) Foulk, Brittany (Stephen) O’Donnell, Aaron (Meaghan Mergens) Sanfillippo, and Hillary (Steven) Bettenhausen; grandfather of Lily, Benjamin, Jonah, and Simon; and his favorite dog, Quincy. He supported his family in any way that he could and loved celebrating their achievements by never missing their baseball games, band concerts, and piano recitals. He shared his love of travel with his family, as they spent every summer vacation choosing a national park to visit, along with making time to visit their favorite spot, Door County, Wisconsin, almost every year. A passionate fisherman, John spent countless hours fishing for walleye and smallmouth bass with his dear fishing buddies. His pride for landscaping led him and Diane to spend much of their time tending to their beautiful gardens. In retirement, John and Diane enjoyed hiking, taking culinary classes, and photographing the landscapes of Italy, France, and other favorite areas in Europe. More than anything, they just loved spending their time together. For those who knew and loved him, the loss that is felt upon his passing weighs heavily. He was loved by all the many people he connected with throughout his lifetime, often with a smile on his face, a story to share, and a hand that always offered to help. John is survived by his wife, Diane, children, grandchildren, and brothers James (Charles) Sanfillippo, Joseph (Linda) Sanfillippo, and Thomas (Karen) Sanfillippo. He was beloved, and will be missed immensely. A visitation will take place at Ahlgrim’s and Sons Funeral Home at 330 W Golf Road, Schaumburg, IL from 3:00pm-7:00pm on Thursday, March 14th. A funeral to celebrate and honor John will take place at St. Peter Lutheran Church at 202 E. Schaumburg Road, Schaumburg, IL on Friday, March 15th at 11:00am, with a burial ceremony following thereafter at St. Peter’s cemetery. A short visitation at the church will precede the funeral from 10:30-11:00am. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the John Sanfillippo Memorial Fund to honor his love for teaching and to further invest in graduating seniors’ continued higher education. Checks can be made payable to John Sanfillippo Memorial Fund or through Zelle: johnsanfillippomemorialfund@gmail.com Please contact johnsanfillippomemorialfund@gmail.com if you have any further questions.
