10/15/2004 Website
Updates
There have been a lot of recent additions to the website. I want to thank all those alumni who allowed me to borrow their originals so I could share them with all of us. I have added several sections under each class.

One is for each years school calendar. Remember those great calendar girl pictures???  So far just the '66-'67 calendar is available

On Stage is for pictures and programs from stage performances, plays, musicals, orchesis, etc. If you're looking for a particular performance you'll may need to check all the years to find the right one.

Another is Commencement Memories which will include the Commencement Program for each year. So far I only have the programs for the class of '68 and '69.

Another section is the Senior Spokesman which will be copies of each classes senior edition of the spokesman.  So far the Senior Spokesman for '69 and '70 are available.

The class of 1972's 20th reunion (1992) books is now available.

I've also added a section for the high school bands, but I don't have them linked from the main page yet. The direct link to these pictures is http://www.whs69.com/band/index.html.

If you have any materials, programs, newspaper articles, personal pictures you took, or any other memorabilia that you'd like to contribute and share with all the alumni please contact me. The more stuff that's offered here the better the memories.  Thanks!  Gary Hedberg '69

10/14/2004 Terri Zaehler Terri Zaehler Moen missed homecoming this year, but for a good reason.  Her son was getting married on Saturday the 9th.  Here are some pictures Terri sent to share:

10/10/2004 No Yearbook Picture An FYI from Tim DeSpain

Hey Gary,  First of all let me say, I appreciate you’re keeping us all up to date on Wheeling events and alumni, especially those who have passed on to greener pastures.  I think it helps us put our lives in perspective and realize just how short and precious life can be.  The fact is, we come here and we leave here, some sooner than others and we don’t have the option of knowing what that time span is.  So we need to be encouraged to make the best of what time we are here.  However, my main reason for writing is to inform you and the others that the Timothy DeSpain that is being sentenced in February for less than admirable behavior for his part in the Enron catastrophe is not I.

Tell anyone who remembers me hey,

Regards,

Tim DeSpain

10/04/2004 Barbara Beard

Lots of changes for Barbara Beard Pelz since the 30th reunion back in 2000.  New married name and new residence. Barbara now lives in DeSoto, WI.

Note

I'm in the process of going through every name on the missing list from every class (1,349) and checking it against the 2001 WHS Alumni Directory, and then checking to see if the missing person may have had any siblings that went to WHS, or Hersey, or BGHS.  I've decided to just make all the phone calls myself.  Trying to coax others to do the calling is a lesson in personal head bashing :-)  Unfortunately more and more of us are passing away and my opportunity to take advantage of sibling-alumni is going to become less and less useful the longer I wait to do this.  So I'm just going to bite the bullet and do it myself.   I'm already up to the "B"'s :-)

10/01/2004 Loren Gunnison Loren Gunnison has been found.  Loren is the band director at Mediapolis High School, in Mediapolis, IA [135].
09/12/2004 Donna Harvel Donna Harvel Balo sent this post hurricane Frances report:

Hi! Well, we made it safe, if not sound! Just got power on today. We are on a well, so a shower was the 1st thing on the agenda! It never felt so great! Although the AC tops the list!

Our area was hit badly. Our home & vehicles did fine. We lost lots of trees as did many others, making egress impossible. Big old oak trees wrapped around power lines a few times before they pulled down wires, poles & transformers. We were without phone, including cell phones for quite a few days, which was an eerie feeling. We had no way of letting family & friends know we were OK, or for them to get ahold of us. A gas, food, water & battery shortage was in effect, which caused panic. And there was a curfew 8p-6a because of all the devastation on the roads & to keep looting down. And with all the rain - there is a mosquito alert.

Under protest ahead of time, my 3 boys came home from college. "why do we want to head towards the storm?" I like them with me - it's a mom thing I guess. Plus, the storm was so undependable once it hits land, it could have gone to any of their campuses. Seth's campus was hit very hard by Charlie.
Afterwards we were sure glad they were here to help remove the fallen trees & dig us out. Boys & their toys loved having excuses to run chain saws & tractors. In our neighborhood there was comraderie & helping each other dig out. I baked & cooked liked crazy for 2d before, so we ate well for a couple days anyway.

Thankfully it looks like Ivan will not cause major damage. Physically & emotionally, I don't think Floridians can handle it. After Charlie people were kind & generous & helpful. With the one/two punch, and days of sweating & hard labor, there were short tempers - we're over it! And there has been the very real fear that all the downed trees & branches & parts of homes would be missles during another storm. We are going to have one gigantic bonfire soon!

My offices also did OK. Had some water damage, thankfully in the back of the office, so nothing was ruined, just stinks. We had no power there until Friday, so I went & sat at the office (sweating!) and saw any of the pregant women, by candlelight, that ventured in. We had just gone to electronic scheduling!

Very funny Hurricane Instructions, btw! I have a ton of stuff to do now that I have lights & AC, plus now that I am not wilting from the heat, I think I can accomplish something!

Thanks for your thoughts & concerns..........Donna

09/05/2004   Virginia 'Ginny' Brown has been added to the Class of '70 roster. I'll let Ginny explain in her own words:

I graduated with the night class because I had to leave my graduating class of 1970 due to pregnancy. My name was Virginia (Ginny) Brown before I got married. I am divorced, have 3 sons, ages 35, 32, and 27, and also have 4 grandkids and one on the way. I am a licensed psychotherapist and do outpatient therapy and crisis intervention. I live in the Denver area and would love to hear from classmates. I am listed under "missing" section as Virginia Sanfilip because I actually graduated with the night class in 1972, but was with the 1970 class until my jr. year when I dropped out for a while. I was married to Richard Sanfilip '68 for about 3 years, when we had our first son who is now 35 and has 4 kids of his own

08/24/2004 Paula Marks Paula Marks Feldman has been found. Paula and her husband Ray live in Cincinnati, OH. [138].
07/24/2004 No Yearbook Picture Fred Cotterell has been found.  Fred and his family are living in Redford, MO.  Here is the update that Fred submitted:
I just turned 52 in June.  I am married, have four kids and i run a totally off grid Christian Radio Station.  We use solar, wind and generators to power out station.  We've been doing this for the past two years.   Before that I was our ministries director's administrative assistant for 3 years..  Since high school I've mostly worked industrial jobs, until we joined this ministry.

I'm sorry but I won't be able to attend Homecoming but we've been up to our ears in work.  I'd love to come up and have a Hackney's burger but that just won't happen.

[139].

07/09/2004 Lois King Lois King Kern has turned herself in.  Lois and her husband live in Escanaba, MI.  Lois provided this information:

I married right out of high school and my husband and I raised three children and lived in Bartlett, Illinois.  He is originally from Michigan and we now reside in Escanaba, MI.  He is retired from the telephone company and I am a retired Pre-school Teacher Assistant.

My children are Jean, age 30 (single and a teacher living in Galesburg, IL); Ronda, age 28 (married with two children and husband living in Harvard, IL); and Rich, age 20 (single and going to Elgin Community College.)

I think as we get older we tend to "long for the good old days" or at least think about them which makes us turn to "whatever happened to......." even if our "good old days" weren't the greatest. I was one of those "squares". My kids ask, "what exactly was a 'square' ?" to them "nerd" is the word...

I went back into the site yesterday and looked at photos. Wish there were more of them! That's the really interesting part ~~seeing what classmates look like today. There was Linda Campbell. Oh my gosh! She picked on me unmercifully! She probably doesn't even remember that!

I grew up (until age 12) in upper Michigan. My mom had a job transfer to Illinois and that is how I ended up in Illinois. I always said that I would never go to any of my high school reunions but thought of going to a reunion of the grade school I went to in Iron Mountain, Michigan. Now I am having thoughts of attending the class of '70 reunion of the future. (At least once!)

Some of the classmates I knew as friends in high school might remember that I had been writing to a "guy from Michigan" who was in Viet Nam at that time. His name was Ron, and yes he is the guy I married. Thirty three years later we are still together and living back in our home state. Our kids' "roots" are in Illinois and they wouldn't think of living in this part of the country. But they come to visit often. Ron and I visit them often too (our daughter Ronda's home is the "hub" of activity). Our daughter Jean and son Rich always join us. Since the grandchildren arrived (Brody, age 2; Addie age 5 months) we make the round trip several times a year. Being a grandmother (nana) is one of the best things that ever happened to me!

07/08/2004 Kristie Ludford

Dear friends - Today,  July 8 at  3:30 AM Kristielea went to be with the Lord.

Jesus said, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me shall live even if he dies, and everyone who lives and believes in Me shall never die. Do you believe this?”  Well do you? Kristie and I certainly believe Him and that’s what puts hope in the midst of grief and loss. I will miss her desperately but I will see her again.

We were all praying either for a miracle of healing or for a peaceful homegoing. Today both prayers were answered. She peacefully stopped breathing with me at her side and woke up in heaven and now she is free of cancer and alive and well in our Savior’s presence.

I will e-mail you the day and time and place of her memorial. You are welcome to come and celebrate her life…and her eternal life. I know many of you will want to send flowers as a gesture of love but I ask you not to. Your cards and e-mails are very much appreciated but it will help immensely not to have flowers and plants to take care of during this time. Thank you all so much for your love and prayers. David Stroder (Hersey '70)

06/21/2004 Kristie Ludford

This note is from David Stroder who along with his wife Kristie Ludford, were members of the WHS Class of 1970, prior to the Hersey split in 1968.

I have recently signed up to be a 2004 Charity Runner in the LaSalle Bank Chicago Marathon in honor of Kristie. The marathon will be on Sunday, October 10 in the same area of the Chicago waterfront where Kristie and I dated.

I have committed to raise at least $1000 for the American Cancer Society in their efforts of eliminating cancer as a major health problem by preventing cancer, saving lives, and diminishing suffering from cancer, through research, education, advocacy, and service.

I would appreciate it if you could sponsor me in this great endeavor.

05/03/2004 Carol Weber Some news from Carol Weber:

Hey Y'all!

Sorry for this rather late announcement. My life has been pretty hectic lately - as you will soon see.

Work is going very well. We have our last two major events this week, and then we go into summer sessions. While classes continue throughout the summer months, the atmosphere at work is very casual, and not nearly as stressful as the rest of the year. I will have about 8 weeks to get ready for the beginning of the next academic year which starts the last week of August.

On March 12th, I took a few days off to travel to NY to pick up Tim and his belongings. He had been out of work since October, and was just barely getting by. He wanted to move down to NC to be closer to family, and to find more productive work. Since NY is the only home Tim has ever known, it was hard for him to leave. I encouraged him to think of it as an adventure. When I saw Tim my heart broke! He had not been eating because of having no money. He said that he wasn't starving because a friend that worked at a pizza place would bring him pizza 3 times a week. Well, his coloring was bad, and he was very, very thin. When we would go to eat, he would take a few bites and say that he was full. If he ate any more, he'd feel sick. He also had a sinus infection.

All of the "mommy" hormones kicked right in. I couldn't get him out of Endicott fast enough. We stopped at Judith's on the way down, and Scott & Anne's the next day. By Wednesday we were back in NC. Because I was living in Fran's house, and it was up for sale, I had been told that Tim could not live there with me. We went looking for an apartment on Sat. I signed a contract on the second place I saw. It is a two-bedroom, two bath, ground floor apartment with a small patio. We moved boxes during the week and the following weekend Randy brought his truck from work and he and Tim moved the big furniture. After 1 1/2 years of living in Fran's house, it was nice to be surrounded by my own things again. Unpacking is still not completely done, but we look like we live there now.
The next two weeks found Tim looking for a car, a car loan, insurance and his NC driver's license, as well as a job. He said that it all went very slow, but by the end of April he had everything. He is working for a landscaping firm in Raleigh, driving a '92 Nissan, and seems to be settling in. He is getting more familiar with the area, and doesn't tell me that he gets lost very often.
So, now you know what's been going on in my life. My new address and phone number follow.
Love, Carol

CP 10 and CP11 English Classes Website
Meet Your Teacher
Hi, I'm Mr. John Graziano
CP 10 & CP11 English
Ottumwa High School

I began teaching at Ottumwa High School in January of 1975.  I have taught just about every subject offered in the Language Arts Department at Ottumwa High School, but my primary teaching assignments have been devoted to 10th Grade English.  I began teaching the CP 11 English classes several years ago.

This web page has been designed to help students and parents keep informed as to what is happening in these classes.  This is my first attempt at designing a web page for my students so please be patient.  I guess time will tell if I'm able to keep up with it on a daily basis.

There should be a place to offer comments.  My e-mail address is also included on one of the pages.  Please let me know what you think of this page.

02/10/2004 Mary Majkowski Mary Majkowski Counley, made a big move, from Wheeling to Buffalo Grove! :-)  Mary is very proud to be owning her own home now!
02/02/2004 Roger Slanksy turned himself in and is now off the missing list.  Here is his story in his own words...

Lost but now found. The story of my life. This is Roger M. Slansky checking in. I put my name on Google just for the heck of it and low and behold I realized I was a cold case. The world can't get rid of me that easily. Without going into a major bio, I've ended up retiring from the printing industry in Los Angeles and moving to the "Rose City", Portland, OR in the beautiful Great Northwest.

I graduated from Harper Jr. College in Palatine in liberal arts and finished up my formal education at Roosevelt University with the Chicago Musical College with a degree in Music Education and a minor in classical saxophone. A cut in music programs in 1975 (great planning) caused by the lagging economy led me into an entirely different field--the printing and publishing management of weekly national magazines, i.e., Time, Newsweek, U.S. News. The career spanned 25 years which started part time with U.S. News & World Report in Chicago, then Los Angeles, Central CA, New Jersey, Dallas and back to Los Angeles for the final 10 years in that industry.

We moved to Portland in '01 to get out of the sun, traffic, pollution, crime and inflated cost of living in So. Cal. It's so beautiful up here. It's a big, little city, charming and green with a change of season, like back home in IL, but without the frigid weather and tons of snow. The winter of '78 did me in and as soon as the ground thawed, I got out of dodge and never looked back (except to visit my folks).

The transition to retirement was difficult, but the 60-70 hour weeks over the years took its toll and now I'm dealing with some of the health issues that come from that and with aging. I stay active with volunteer work and my life long creative hobby of gardening.

Sharon Weld was my high school sweetheart and we became engaged right after graduation. But it didn't last and Sharon had a destiny with Great Britain where she moved with her new husband and started a new family where I think she still resides. I don't know here last name, but her younger brother, Winfield Weld may still live in Tucson and would know her where abouts.

Well, so much for no long bio. Hope this helps with your quest. I would like to hear what you're up to and how the search is going. I don't seem to remember you, but I just found you in the '69 yearbook and see we ran in different circles. You were a '69 jock and I was a '70 band geek. I probably did some of your football halftime shows.

The high school years were difficult, but I try to remember that we lived through historic times, with the Beatles, Sonny and Cher at the Elmhurst theater, endless afternoons at Randhurst Mall, the moon landing, Nixon, Vietnam and lots of English Leather. Thanks--it was fun reminiscing.

Best Regards, Roger Slansky
