08/23/2010 Gretchen Fricke I received very sad news today that Gretchen Fricke Hover passed away on Saturday, August 21, 2010.  I received this note from Gretchen's older brother Carl, who is a Class of 1969 WHS grad.

My sister, Gretchen, died on Saturday from pancreatic cancer. That process, from start to finish, took less than 60 days. She lived in Scottsdale, AZ where she was an English teacher at Desert Mountain high school. She had a son, Jordan, and daughter, Kira. Kira is starting as a freshman at AZ State this week. Jordan graduated from there three years ago.  No Obituary was prepared, so there's nothing to reference along that line.  A link is being created (it is not yet ready- the plans is to have this done by the end of this week) that tells a living story of her life- where friends and family can read and post notes. The page is not finished yet – the url is http://memorialwebsites.legacy.com/gretchenhoover

Gretchen Fricke
Rest in Peace Gretchen.

Biography:  Gretchen Hoover was born in Chicago, IL in 1952 and was the only daughter of Harold and Mary-Lou Fricke.  Gretchen has two brothers Carl Fricke (San Rafael, CA) and John Fricke (Wadsworth, IL).  She has two children, Jordan (26) and Kira (18) who both reside in Scottsdale, AZ.

Gretchen was a proud grandaughter of Swedish immgrants who came to Chicago, IL and planted their roots in Andersonville (a Swedish community) where they built an apartment building.  Three generations resided in this building, including Gretchen and her parents. As Gretchen and her siblings grew older, her parents moved the family to the suburbs in Wheeling, IL.  There she attended the local high school and always aspired to be a young athlete, but given the time period, young women were only given the opportunity to be cheerleaders.  Gretchen cheered throughout high school and as an adult continued to pursue her love for sports and athletic activiites.

After high school Gretchen attended college and recived her degree in English.  She lived in Michigan for a short time before moving to Buffalo Grove, IL where she raised her two children.  From there she moved to Scottsdale, AZ by way of San Ramon, CA.  Since moving to Arizona, she has worked for the Scottsdale Unified School District.  Seven years of that time was dedicated to being an English teacher at Desert Mountain High School.

Gretchen's life work has revolved around  being a dedicated mother to Jordan and Kira as well as inspiring and working with young adults.  Her passion and love for her family, both at home and at school, will forever make a diffence in countless lives.

Class of 1970 40th Reunion

Since our first letter back in June, many of you have asked for details concerning our 40th reunion. Here they are:

This is our informal reunion. We'll be part of the Bombers' event. We'll have our own room if we have more than 100 people attending. In reality the two groups will just flow. Doors open at 7 pm. We'll have greeters at the door. Always a fun event. Could be even more fun if a bunch of us show up.

October 16th - Saturday

Dam No. 1 - Potawatomi Forest Preserve
Entrance on Dundee Rd. just east of Milwaukee Ave. Follow the Bomber signs to the pavilion.
Again we're going to join the annual Bombers' Picnic. All are welcome. Families are welcome. There'll be music, food, beer, etc. (For a small donation/fee which is applied to the scholarship fund.) It's just a good old fashion picnic.

So far, we've only heard back from about 50 of you and we KNOW that more of you want to come. We need an accurate headcount to make sure we have enough room for all of us.

So, please, please

RSVP . . . BY SEPTEMBER 15, 2010 IF YOU PLAN TO ATTEND

PLEASE CONTACT

Linda Campbell Eaton alwayseaton@comcast.net  847-624-5049 OR  Alixe Lischett cabernetco@earthlink.net  630-309-9463

Hope to see you in October!

P.S. If you'd like to help here are a few things we need:
• Volunteers to greet people at Friday's Event and at Picnic on Saturday.
• Money is always appreciated. Helps to offset some costs, i.e. postage, name tags, stuff like that.
• Chili for Saturday's Picnic. We'd like to show the Class of 1968 that the Class of 1970 can also cook.
• Calling other alumni.
• Raffle Prize Donations - doesn't have to be big, but the Bombers' raise money for their scholarship program thru raffles on Saturday at the picnic. They'd appreciate the help.

08/02/2010 Art Andrews

Hi Everyone, I retired from IBM in January 2007. Susan and I sold our house in Phoenix and built a house on property we had owned for several years near Sandpoint, Idaho to get away from the long hot summers of Arizona. I volunteer delivering meals from the local Senior Center one or two days a week and we help out at two of the festivals they have here annually. We play golf in the summer and snow ski in the winter at nearby Schweitzer mountain resort. Enjoy traveling during the in-between seasons while we are healthy and can still walk easily. Some time down the road we are going to be snow birds traveling between Tucson, AZ and Sandpoint, Idaho. Our three sons and two grandsons are scattered around the country in New Jersey, Oregon and Arizona.
Sincerely, Art Andrews  Class 0f 1970. suzart59@yahoo.com

04/12/2010 Kathleen Foran News from Kathleen Foran, I have not attended any of the reunions and I expect to be in Spain this fall so probably won’t make it to this one either.  I’ve spent my professional life in arts management.   The last twenty years I’ve managed a company called In the Heart of the Beast Puppet & Mask Theatre – http://www.hobt.org    My husband, Tom Beach, is a landscape architect and does site plan review for the city of St. Paul.   We have two kids – a daughter who is 23, finished with college and doing a VISTA (similar to Americorp) year in Fresno, California.  We also have a son who is 21 and is a junior studying history and political science at the University of Minnesota at Morris.  We live in St. Paul on one of Minnesota’s 10,000 lakes.
04/03/2010 Ellen Lois Workman Sad and belated news to pass along.  I just found out that Ellen Lois Workman passed away a few years ago after her fight with breast cancer.  Her younger brother Ralph, who graduated from BGHS was the one who provided the information.  I have no full details at this time.

Rest in Peace Ellen
01/13/2009 Diane Knowles Diane Knowles Naishtat sent along this picture of her husband Robert and herself at a New Year's Eve party.
Diane Knowles Naishtat

My oldest son Ken works for NASA at the Dryden Flight Research Center on Edwards AFB in Lancaster, CA.   Our youngest son, Sam, is a percussion major at Univ of North Texas in Denton.  A rocket scientist and a music man!  They are wonderful young men and we are so proud of them.  40 years since high school - so much has happened, good and bad.  There is a lot more loss at our age - that's the only part I don't like.  The rest is okay.  But there's always a lot of laugh about - and I'm going to keep laughing as long as I can!

01/08/2009 Dan Mathis Dan Mathis sent along some family photos to share with everyone.

The first was at our son's October wedding in MN.  The young lovely lady next to me is my wife, Yelena.  The tall guy is my son David.  Then Anastasia, my daughter, and her husband, Vadim

The nexty photo is me with my beautiful daughter Jennifer and David at Anastasia's wedding in May

This is Anastasia in her wedding dress.  Needless to say, I am very happy to have gained such a wonderful addition to our family.  Birth is a matter of circumstance, and I would like to think that Yelena gave me the gift of another daughter to love the day Anastasia stepped into my life
01/01/2010   Happy New Year!  There are still 115 members of the Class of 1970 missing.
