Holiday greetings from Bruce
Barr:
|
My Dear Friends and Loved Ones,
I wish you all Greetings, Good Will, Good Health, Joy and
Good Cheer! I write this year from Spokane, WA where I am
currently flying as a Captain for Empire Airlines and FedEx
throughout the Northwest, Alaska and the Southwest. I have
been in the Spokane area since July, permanently moving here
in late August from Richland, WA. The job keeps me on the
road a fair amount, but I only had two moves this year, less
than in other years. Last Christmas I was finishing up a
year flying for McCall Aviation from Boise and McCall, ID
into the Idaho back country Wilderness and National Forest
areas. At that time I was also flying the UPS cargo
Boise-McCall-Boise weekdays, but that was extremely weather
dependent and in Dec. last year I only made it to McCall
about 10 days out of the month; January was worse. As I only
was paid on days when I was able to fly to McCall, Christmas
and Jan. last year were pretty lean.
I left McCall Aviation in January '04 and
in Feb. began flying a Cessna Caravan for Mid-Atlantic
Freight, headquartered in Greensboro, NC, on a
Pasco-Seattle-Pasco, WA freight run Monday PM through Sat AM
weekly. Mid-Atlantic had a contract to fly Airborne/DHL
freight over the Cascades and I was their pilot until late
May when another company flying larger aircraft won the
contract from Airborne. I had only permanently moved to
Richland (Tri-Cities), WA Mar. 31. The Tri-Cities area is
not a hotbed of aviation activity, but with a LOT of Divine
Assistance I was able to connect with the Chief Pilot for
Empire Airlines, the local FedEx feeder airline, who just
happened to live across the Columbia River in Pasco.
I now fly the Caravan, F27 and ATR42(the
F27 and ATR are large, twin-engine turbo props; ex-airliners
that require a 1st Officer in addition to the Captain).
Empire used to be a passenger airline that gradually became
the primary short and medium distance feeder operator for
FedEx in the Western U.S.). Currently we do not carry
passengers, but the company still is authorized by the FAA
to do so if the need arose in the future. HQ is Coeur d'
Alene, ID. I am enjoying myself flying well-maintained
aircraft for a really First Class operator. FedEx is #1 in
overnight package delivery for good reasons. I have a
schedule each month, time off, vacation, travel, insurance
and a lot of other benefits. I am planning to visit Robert
in France next Aug. on my 2 week vacation. As part of the
FedEx Feeder System I also have to opportunity to transfer
anywhere that FedEx operates feeder aircraft should I choose
to relocate from the Northwest.
Robert, is now a full professor at the
University of Lyon and the University of Savioe in Chambery,
France. He lives in Chambery and commutes to Lyon (about 1
hr each way) M/T/W each week. His classes there are from
8AM-1PM. He then returns to Chambery by 2PM and is off until
4PM when he teaches class at Savioe from 4PM-7PM. He has
Thursday through Sunday off. He teaches a variety of classes
to European students in English and does computer work for
both schools as well. He is paid well by both schools and
will be up for permanent appointment next year in the French
university system. He enjoys both schools very much and
feels that it helps him that there is a little competition
for his expertise between them. He loves Chambery, which is
a city of about 30,000 located in the French Alps and that
is where he will continue to live. He has a small car which
he drives to and from Lyon as well as to/from other places
in the local area. He has a French-Italian girlfriend, Eva,
who is teaching in Ireland this year. Robert recently
returned from Ireland and visited Austria, Germany and
Scandinavia last summer. He is very cosmopolitan and blends
well with European life. He is living his dream every day.
James, my older son, I have not heard
from since Christmas last year. When I tracked him down then
he was staying with his mother, Carmelita, at her home in
Portland, OR. Jim is not one to be in touch very much and I
have learned from him that no news means things are moving
along all right. Jim has moved around almost as much as I
have these past few years and it has sometimes been tough to
stay connected. Now that I have a stable base I feel that we
will be able to have more contact and communication.
I continue to love flying airplanes; it
is like oxygen to me. I am also beginning to pursue several
business opportunities in addition to flying for a living.
My goal is to develop a passive income that will replace the
salary that flying for Empire provides within 2 years. Then
I will be able to offer my flying, construction, engineering
and life expertise to individuals and organizations in need,
something I have wanted to do for years. I would probably
continue to fly for Empire or another FedEx feeder operator
as well.
That is the news for this year. It sure
has gone by quickly. Hope that you are all well, happy and
prosperous. The Merriest of Christmas's and Happiest of New
Years to you all! My contact information: 9318 E. Upriver

Website
Updates |
There have been a lot of recent additions to
the website. I want to thank all those alumni who allowed me to borrow
their originals so I could share them with all of us. I have added
several sections under each class.
One is for each years school calendar. Remember those great calendar
girl pictures??? So far just the '66-'67 calendar is available
On Stage is for pictures and programs from stage performances, plays,
musicals, orchesis, etc. If you're looking for a particular performance
you'll may need to check all the years to find the right one.
Another is Commencement Memories which will include the Commencement
Program for each year. So far I only have the programs for the class of
'68 and '69.
Another section is the Senior Spokesman which will be copies of each
classes senior edition of the spokesman. So far the Senior
Spokesman for '69 and '70 are available.
The class of 1972's 20th reunion (1992)
books is now available.
I've also added a section for the high school bands, but I don't have
them linked from the main page yet. The direct link to these pictures is
http://www.whs69.com/band/index.html.
If you have any materials, programs, newspaper articles, personal
pictures you took, or any other memorabilia that you'd like to
contribute and share with all the alumni please contact me. The more
stuff that's offered here the better the memories. Thanks!

Note |
I'm in
the process of going through every name on the missing list from every
class (1,349) and checking it against the 2001 WHS Alumni Directory, and
then checking to see if the missing person may have had any siblings
that went to WHS, or Hersey, or BGHS. I've decided to just make all the
phone calls myself. Trying to coax others to do the calling is a lesson
in personal head bashing :-) Unfortunately more and more of us are
passing away and my opportunity to take advantage of sibling-alumni is
going to become less and less useful the longer I wait to do this. So
I'm just going to bite the bullet and do it myself. I'm already up to
the "B"'s :-) |

Yes, these are pictures
of the same person taken about 18 months apart. The first is me
before retirement and the second, well you can guess when it was
taken. I retired from the United States Air Force as a Chief
Master Sergeant (E-9) with over 30 years of service. I am a
Local Elder and Sabbath School Teacher in the New Carlisle
Seventh-day Adventist Church. My family and I enjoy Bible study,
many forms of music, old movies, stained glass work, candle
making, soap making (cp, hp, m&p), woodworking, computing,
astronomy, gold prospecting and a host of other things.

Rich Payne sent
these pictures from the the beach in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida just in
front of hurricane Francis:
I went out to the Beach this
morning to get a few shots pictures for you but was only
there for a short while because the Squalls were coming and
going pretty fast. The winds were gusting up to 55 MPH
already and the police came and told everyone that that had
to leave All that was left at the beach was the police and
the T.V. crews.
Here are just a few that I took, I hope they came out ok, I
didn't have time to fix them up. I will try to take more
during and after the Hurricane....
Take care, hope to write to you again....Ha! Sorry about the
clarity of the pictures, the salt water spray and the sand
was pretty thick. The spray from the water so heavy at times
that it looked like fog.

Some news from
Lois Papen Groszek:
We live at beautiful
Birch Lake in southwestern Michigan. My husband, John, has been
employed at the University of Notre Dame for 20 years as a
computer analyst and I have been at Saint Mary's College for 9
years as Operations Coordinator of Advancement Services.
Although we have no children, we can borrow our great-nieces
whenever we want. They love to come up to the lake. We recently
purchased a new 18 foot pontoon boat after many years of owning
an older speed boat. We love cruising the lake on our pontoon.
We can still pull our youngest great-niece on a knee-board or
tube with the pontoon. We also enjoy snow-skiing at a local ski
area in winter and we enjoy travel, especially cruises. |

Sharron Vincent
Porter and her husband Nate, have moved from Batavia, IL to FL:
Thought I'd let you know
that Nate and I are moving to Florida for a few years (a minor
detour on our way to AZ, I guess). Nate's started up a (steel
drum remanufacturing) business there with some old business
associates and needs to be in Florida a lot. He's had an
apartment down there for several months now and visits week-ends
as often as he can. (No fun!) We will be getting a new server
and e-mail address once we're down there and set up. Meanwhile,
our temporary address will be a P.O. box ( P.O. Box1039,
Ocoee,Fla. 34761)until our condo in downtown Orlando is
completed. After September 15 (or so...), our address will be
One South Eola Drive, Unit #8,
Orlando, Florida 32801. I can be reached on my cell
phone until then at
630-267-2422. I'll try to remember to send you this
info again after we get our new telephone installed. Guess I'll
have to wait for my Sedona dream to come to fruition!
Meanwhile, I'll just start painting again... Shall I join the
Red Hat Society? No, green is more my color! - Sharron

This is a follow-up e-mail from Sharon Koeppen Grandt:
Dear Family and Friends,
I am in the process of tying up all of the "loose ends"
following Skip's farewell party yesterday and things
wouldn't be complete without a final email to all of you
wonderful caring people. I hope I didn't alarm anyone by
sending it from his email but it just felt like the thing to
do.
As I sit here reflecting on all of those late nights and
early mornings when I turned to all of you with my joy when
things seemed better and heartfelt pleas for prayer when I
wasn't sure what was coming at us, I can't begin to find the
words to adequately say thank you. You have all walked with
me through this journey and I just had to send one more
note, this time of celebration that my hero and your friend
is now celebrating in Heaven. Many of you already know all
to well the details of his final days and in reflecting upon
each moment over and over again I am amazed at little things
I recall for the first time about miracle moments when he
touched my heart with a look, a smile, a hug, a kiss and
even tears. My best friend, lover, hero and champion
(borrowed from Pastor Marc's comments yesterday) is
physically gone from me now but his imprint on my heart and
soul will never fade.
I take such pleasure in cherishing the years we had together
and, yes, even the special relationship we developed
throughout our illness for I feel like it was mine as well.
For in those moments I learned things about Skip for the
first time, things that reinforced the love we shared and
gave me a glimpse of what Heaven will be like when we are
reunited. I'm not sure what exactly he is doing right now,
but I know that he isn't being poked and prodded, that there
are no more bone marrow biopsies in his future, that there
will be no more reactions to transfusions, no more pained
and confused looks in his eyes and no more pills. In their
place I picture eyes filled with tears of joy and amazement
as he looks into the eyes of our Savior, songs of praise
from his lips, and long wonderful talks with family members
who preceded him, authors of his favorite books of scripture
(St. Paul, James, Timothy, Matthew, King David...the list
goes on), his historical heroes like Abe Lincoln. In short,
I envision him in bliss.
You are an amazing group of people and I plan to continue to
communicate with you and rely on you for strength during
those moments I know only too well will come when I just
don't know if I can go on without him. I must and will go
on, however, because that is what he asked me to do.
God Bless all of you and your families. Please appreciate
each and every day that God gives you and praise Him for it.
Our God is an Awesome God!
With love and gratitude,
Sharon (slgrandt@wideopenwest.com)

It grieves me to pass along the news that Skip Grandt
has passed away after his heroic battle against leukemia.
|
|
My daughters and I are
very touched by your continuous support and incredible
comments about Skip. He was our hero and our hearts hurt in
a way I never could have imagined but, at the same time, we
rejoice that his battle has been won and he is residing with
the Lord. I like to think that he is pitching on the Field
of Dreams in Heaven.
It was very nice of
you to share news of his passing with so many as he had a
great many friends spanning the years you noted. I would be
very pleased to provide you with the details of the
"celebration of joy" that we have planned for him. His wake
will be held on Tuesday, April 20th, at Meadows Funeral
Home, 3615 Kirchoff Road, Rolling Meadows from 3:00 - 9:00
p.m. His funeral service will follow on Wednesday, April
21st, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 100 S.
School Street in Mt. Prospect. His obituary will be in the
Daily Herald on Monday and Tuesday of next week.
As I know you are
aware, Skip has spent all except about 30 days of this year
as an inpatient at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago
and our goal of getting him home before he passed away was
precarious as he slipped away from us so quickly. We
arrived by ambulance at our home at 2:30 p.m. yesterday and
he fell asleep in the Lord at approximately 11:05 p.m. An
interesting and actually somewhat comforting thing...his
father passed away on the same exact date 14 years
earlier. By the time Hospice arrived to pronounce him it
was Saturday, the 17th, but we all know that in actuality it
was the same day as his dad. Now they are celebrating in
Heaven together. His passing was peaceful. The girls,
their guys, my sister, niece and I were at his bedside and
knew that his labored breathing couldn't continue much
longer. I asked that my daughter's boyfriend Patrick go to
my car and get our Michael Card CD as his music is very dear
to Skip and me. As the music began to play Elshadai (sp?) I
sang the song to Skip. He opened his eyes, which he hadn't
done in hours, looked at me and peacefully went to sleep. I
absolutely believe God allowed his life to end at that
moment in that way to provide Peace to me. Gary, I hurt so
badly as I miss him so much already but I rejoice in his
victory and the end of his battle. No one could have
endured what he did for so long with more courage and
patience and we thanked Him everyday for the Grace that
enabled us to continue from day to day. Our God is an
Awesome God and His mercies are new to us each and every
day.
Thank you again for
your friendship, love and concern for all of us.
Sincerely and with
gratitude,
Sharon, Kelly and
Kris Grandt

Exciting news from
Ellen Drinkwater:
Bonjour! My guy Dan and I
went to Paris the 1st week in February 2004,it has always been
my dream to go there, and it turned out to be an unforgettable
trip. The morning we got there we walked to the Eiffel Tower;
and after climbing up a zillion stairs, Dan proposed marriage in
French, A crowd gathered while he was on one knee, reading the
handwritten proposal he had secretly worked on during the flight
over (I was sleeping). He had the hard part of speaking in
French, I only had to say "Oui". He gave me a beautiful
engagement ring, and we are both walking on air,,,
Not sure when or where we will get married (how can we top
Paris?) but it will be sometime this year. Paris is a very
romantic city! I highly recommend it,,,I have found my
"Soul-Mate" and wanted to share this with my high school
friends. |
