I'm sorry to have to report that another member of the WHS Class of 1967
has passed away.
Donald F Savage, 66, fought the hard fight to beat cancer so
he could go to all the concerts he had bought tickets for this
summer to help get through his chemo treatments. He loved live
music and attended every festival but will miss his last 3
concerts as he lost his battle on July 28.
Doc Savage, as
his students called him, taught physics and advanced chemistry at
Ankeny High School until he retired in 2010. His unorthodox way of
teaching helped so many students succeed in college that
ex-students called to have him tutor their children.
Donald
was born in Wilmington Delaware, graduated from Wheeling High
School in IL, and went to Knox College on a full academic
scholarship where he majored in Physics and minored in Chemistry
and Math. He went to graduate school at ISU where he worked as a
Surface Chemist for the Department of Energy in Ames Lab. His joy
was being a TA and interacting with students, so he earned his
teaching certificate in 1980 and began teaching at Ankeny, where
he discovered his second joy, sailing on Big Creek.
Donald
is survived by his wife of 43 years, Jackie, his son and
daughter-in-law, Trevor and Aya Savage, two grandchildren, Aoi and
William, and daughter and son-in-law, Allie and Tim Costa. A
private family ceremony will celebrate his life. Published in
Des Moines Register on July 31, 2016

Don had two siblings that I know of what went to WHS.
Older brother Robert Savage 1966, and Frank Savage 1970.
From Jackie Savage: Donald died of cancer July 28, 2016. He
was retired after teaching Physics and AP Chem at Ankeny High
School in Ankeny Iowa for 30 years. He was married for 43 years
and had 2 wonderful children, a married daughter who is currently
finishing her PHd in Astro-Physics at the University of Iowa and a
son who is married with 2 children and currently teaches in Kobe,
Japan. Donald spent his summers sailing his 25ft Macgregor and
going to concerts and music festivals. He was a good person who
didn’t know a stranger and is missed not only by his family and
friends but also by the hundreds of students he continued to help
long after they left his classroom. |

Rest In Peace Don. |

I was just informed by John Gribbon '66, that his younger brother Dan
passed away on March 15th, 2008. Here is Dan's obituary notice from
Legacy.com
|
Daniel Ray "Dan" Gribbon A memorial service for Daniel Ray

11:30 a.m. Wednesday, March 19, at Gunderson East Funeral
Home, 5203 Monona Drive, Monona, Wis., with a time of
sharing from 10:30 a.m. until the time of the service.
Born May 31, 1949, in Redwood Falls, Minn., to Raymond T.
and Sarah Stevenson Gribbon, he died Saturday, March 15,
2008, at the Hospice Care Inc. Center in Madison, Wis.,
after a battle with Alzheimer's Disease for over five
years. Dan grew up in Wheeling, Ill., attending local
schools and graduated from the University of Wisconsin in
1974, with a degree in social sciences. Dan started with
Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Dane County as a
volunteer, progressing to case worker, case work
supervisor and becoming executive director in 1984. Dan
retired after 29 years in 2002. Under Dan's leadership,
the Couples Program, the Friends of Kids Program and the
School Friends Program were established. The agency
expanded into Columbia, Marquette and Green counties under
Dan's leadership as well. Dan also served a term as
president of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Wisconsin. One of
his proudest accomplishments was to be a big brother match
to a 12-year-old little brother named Mark Rounds. Mark
and Dan's match did not end when Mark became 18, but Dan
remained close while Mark started a family and eventually
became a top executive in his field. Dan loved family,
friends, fishing (especially in Canada and Door County),
travel and putzing in his gardens. He was involved in
Downtown Rotary Club of Madison for many years. Dan was
preceded in death by his parents and is survived by his
loving wife, Julie Mandelert Gribbon; brother, John (Sue)
Gribbon; nephews and niece, JT Gribbon, Jennifer (Jack)
Bedrosian and Mitchell Mandelert; and great-nephews, Luke,
Jacob and Matthew Bedrosian. In lieu of flowers, the
family suggests memorials be given to any of the
following, the Daniel R. Gribbon Achievement Award Fund of
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Dane County, the Alzheimer's
Association or Hospice Care Inc. Finally, the family
wishes to thank Britt Hutchinson, Angela Novoselac and
Megan Gerbar for their exceptional in-home care of Dan
during his struggles. For information, 608-221-5420.
