News from John Wellbank.
Married Sarah J. Welch in '79. Some of you
know her from Forest View High, graduated '72. We met at Harper
and attended Illinois State U. together. We have move
around a little, from Chicago area to Seattle, then Cincinnati
(attended Xavier for MBA), and 6 years ago So. California.
We have two fantastic kids in college, Clayton is in his third
year and Calyse is a Freshman. My picture is not in the
'72 yearbook as I had temporarily lost my head in high school.
Common problem with teens back then. Sarah and I live in
an old adobe home, up on a cliff over the ocean. No heating
system, no a/c, just thick mud brick walls and lots of sunshine.
We walk the dogs down the hill to the beach several times a
week, and often I take a swim for a mile or so. Sarah watches
the dogs watch me. For the dog lovers out there, Mangus is a
Bordeaux Mastiff (remember the movie Turner and Hooch), and
Elwood is an Old English Bulldog, not the "canned ham" body
type, but the kind you see on a Mack truck. I wish I could write
something funny or witty about my time at Wheeling, but those
stories that I remember are personal, and the ones that are not
personal, I can't remember. |

Website
Updates |
There have been a lot of recent additions to
the website. I want to thank all those alumni who allowed me to borrow
their originals so I could share them with all of us. I have added
several sections under each class.
One is for each years school calendar. Remember those great calendar
girl pictures??? So far just the '66-'67 calendar is available
On Stage is for pictures and programs from stage performances, plays,
musicals, orchesis, etc. If you're looking for a particular performance
you'll may need to check all the years to find the right one.
Another is Commencement Memories which will include the Commencement
Program for each year. So far I only have the programs for the class of
'68 and '69.
Another section is the Senior Spokesman which will be copies of each
classes senior edition of the spokesman. So far the Senior
Spokesman for '69 and '70 are available.
The class of 1972's 20th reunion (1992)
books is now available.
I've also added a section for the high school bands, but I don't have
them linked from the main page yet. The direct link to these pictures is
http://www.whs69.com/band/index.html.
If you have any materials, programs, newspaper articles, personal
pictures you took, or any other memorabilia that you'd like to
contribute and share with all the alumni please contact me. The more
stuff that's offered here the better the memories. Thanks!

I'm
in the process of going through every name on the missing list from
every class (1,349) and checking it against the 2001 WHS Alumni
Directory, and then checking to see if the missing person may have had
any siblings that went to WHS, or Hersey, or BGHS. I've decided to just
make all the phone calls myself. Trying to coax others to do the
calling is a lesson in personal head bashing :-) Unfortunately more and
more of us are passing away and my opportunity to take advantage of
sibling-alumni is going to become less and less useful the longer I wait
to do this. So I'm just going to bite the bullet and do it myself.
I'm already up to the "B"'s :-) |

member....NO, NO ONE passed away. The Virginia Sanfilip that was
listed as missing from your class was really Virginia 'Ginny' Brown who
was part of the class of '70; but left after her sophomore year and
finished up at Wheeling at night school and received her diploma in
1972. She has been moved to be part of the class of '70. |

I received word today from
Jim Wilbat that Donna Marie Smith passed away on March 15th, 2004.
This additional information just came in from
Janel Ketelsen Jensen:
Hi Gary, Yes this has been a
week of sad news. Donna Maria Smith DeLucca, died on March 15, 2004
at 1:00 a.m. of a massive heart attack. Donna was married to Sam
DeLucca for 21 years, they have 2 daughters, Angela (Smith) Greek,
her husband Trey, and one daughter Kiana; Jamie (Smith) Simon, her
husband Josh, and one daughter Tara. They all live in California,
near their father Sam DeLucca. Donna has an older brother Ned
(Edwin?) Smith, sisters Nita, Debbie, and one younger brother Ken.
Which I believe all graduated from Wheeling. Her brother Ken was a
wrestler in his years at Wheeling. Her parents, I believe live in
Virginia. There is a memory service on Sat. March 27, 2004 at 12:00
noon. I don't know where. Donna was my best friend for 37 years, she
lost all contact with friends and family during the past couple of
years. Until a month ago. She will be deeply missed, but I know that
she is finally at peace. Attached are a few of my favorite
pictures of Donna, one with my son back in 88, one with Me Janel,
Cindy, and Jill, in 88, and the two of us in 1991. I will send
more info as I get it. I hope you can share these pictures on the
web.
