12/29/2002 Sue Lovdjieff and family. Christmas 2002 Sue Lovdjieff Levin is back on line and wanted to share this picture of her family with all of us. Sue also wanted to share this, "I moved exactly 1 year ago from Chapel Hill, NC to Devon, PA, a suburb or Philly. My husband Jeremey took a transfer with GlaxoSmithKline, a drug company where he is a research oncologist. My business moved with me this time. I do graphic design on my computer from home. Share my office with 2 noisy parrots and a terrier mutt. Jena, 19, our oldest daughter is a sophomore at U. of Georgia in Athens, majoring in psychology. Our son, Perry, is 16 and a sophomore and our youngest, Natalie, is 14 and a freshman. She has been a vegetarian for 2 years but just recently turned totally vegan and I now spend way more time in the kitchen than I'd like to! It's a real challenge--anyone with a favorite vegan recipe out there...pass it on! Other than that, life is good. They attend different high schools so I have twice the volunteer activities now and twice as many people's names and faces to forget. I am happily adjusting to my new surroundings. Love to work in my garden and build stone walls and yard art. Constantly overdo it and feel the aches and pains the next day, but I refuse to "grow old gracefully!". We have two sons, Rich 30 years old single leaving downtown Chicago, and Jeff,27, who is married has two sons; our first grandsons.. Our high school years were some of the best years of our life with the most memorable places, people, and times. From the football and basketball games, to the coke dances with L & the BC's (Life in the Big City) band.. The Wheeling drive-in where you could get five people in the trunk of my 1963 Buick Wildcat; talk about school spirit. convertible, or parking at Dam #1 Wheeling forest preserve and being chased out late at night for "fooling around". Diane and I went to three proms together because it was the thing to do!! Those were the days!!!

10/19/2002 Jack Bastable Ok WHS Sports fans, here is an article by Bob Frisk Asst. Managing Editor/Sports who has been covering sports for the Daily Herald newspaper for 45 years:

How can you make comparisons? 'Best ever' label fits many athletes

Jack Bastable in his senior year

as a Wheeling High School star.

There's one question I have been asked so many times this fall that I should have an answer ready by now. I don't.

How does Buffalo Grove's quarterback/safety star Tom Zbikowski rate with the other outstanding football players I have seen in my 45 years with this newspaper? Is he the best ever?

Good question.

You can keep asking because I have become an expert at wishy-washy answers.

"Let's wait until the end of the season."

"Well, I guess he's certainly in the top four or five."

"He's very good, but how can you really compare high school players today to those of 20, 30 or 40 years ago?"

I can think of many former area players over the past 45 years that I would consider offering as candidates for further discussion.

For example, Jack Bastable always has been the one that came immediately to mind when the "greatest ever" question is asked.

I don't mean Bastable was the greatest runner or greatest passer or greatest defensive player or greatest kicker. I am talking about the greatest total package of a high school football player.

A transfer student by way of St. Louis and Detroit, Bastable arrived at Wheeling as a sophomore. In four soph games, he ran for 800 yards and 14 touchdowns and a star was born.

Bastable, a unanimous All-State selection, played for very good Wheeling teams in 1967 and '68, but it's very hard to compare kids who starred in the '60s with 2002. Training methods have changed. There are more summer camps, more everything.

To me, anyone with the "best ever" label has to play both ways, and that's not always a priority in today's football. Zbikowski goes both ways. Bastable went both ways.

You certainly have added stature if you're a quarterback (Zbikowski) because the position is so key to the success of any team. Tom also has that tremendous speed that separates him from so many others I have seen play.

Although Bastable didn't have that super speed, he was a punishing runner and so hard to bring down. I think of former Mid-Suburban League stars like Dan Pohlman (Barrington) and Jason Hawkins (Schaumburg) for that same kind of sheer power.

Here was just a typical game for the 5-foot-11, 190-pound Bastable in a 31-0 win over a decent Elk Grove team:

• He carried the ball 12 times for 118 yards and had one touchdown run of 55 yards.

• He intercepted 2 passes, returned one for a 50-yard touchdown and should have been credited with a spectacular 102-yarder on the other. That one was called back by mistake, and the official who called the play later wrote a letter of apology to Bastable and his coach.

The way Jack intercepted that pass in the end zone and then zig-zagged his way 102 yards down the entire field was a thing of beauty.

• He also caught 5 passes that day for 74 yards.

• He boomed two punts of 54 and 42 yards and did the kickoffs.

• He kicked a 32-yard field goal.

• He completed a couple of passes and also made several tackles on defense from his linebacker's position.

• He returned the kickoffs and punts.

By the way, he didn't play the final eight minutes.

After that 1968 game, Wheeling coach Jack Liljeberg told reporters, "That was typical. He did a little bit of everything."

Where will he play in college, coach Liljeberg?

Now you'll really see the comparison with Zbikowski, whose college position remains one of the great question-marks of the recruiting season.

"He could be a running back or a flanker on offense or a defensive back," Liljeberg said about Bastable. "And he's definitely a big-league punter.

"Every team has geared its defense to stop him," the Wheeling coach added. "In fact, one team had two linebackers follow him on every play. He could barely move."

Bastable, who fought through a shoulder injury as a senior, scored 99 points in his final four high school football games.

Just like Zbikowski, Bastable was recruited by the big guys - schools like the Big Ten, Notre Dame, USC and UCLA.

He went to Missouri primarily for baseball and his St. Louis roots (he also was all-area in baseball as a catcher and basketball as a guard at Wheeling), but he contributed in football for coach Dan Devine in the roles of tailback, receiver, kicker. He was among the nation's leaders as a punter.

Bastable eventually was signed as a third baseman-outfielder by the Oakland A's after his senior year of Missouri football. He was traded by Oakland to Philadelphia in May of 1973 in a straight player deal for Deron Johnson, who later played for the White Sox.

The Phillies put him back in his natural position of catcher in their farm system, but Bastable's baseball dream finally ended just short of the major leagues. He never wanted to become a career minor-leaguer.

Now that you have met Jack Bastable, this brings me back to the question I have been hearing all fall.

If you continue to press me on how I rank Tom Zbikowski among all the players I have seen in this area, I might answer this way:

"He's in the team picture and definitely in the front row."

How's that for another wishy-washy answer?

He had chest pains on April 1st, nice day - huh?, and went to the hospital, they were able to head off a heart attach and decided to do a quadruple bi-pass. He did not have any pre-existing conditions like, smoker, high blood pressure, diabetic, etc. so it must be genetic. 01/20/2002 John Legh-Page

News from John Legh-Page, "FYI, I just had my six month cancer checkup last week and got a clean bill of health again. My urologist says that the functions of my one kidney appear to be doing a lot better than both of his. I go back again in another 6 months for an update.

I am back off running again on the weekends towards my DiveMaster scuba dive certification. I am helping my dive club sink platforms and wrecked boats in 60 feet of water for the next couple of months in a new quarry lake that they are setting up for open water dive training. I recently completed my Rescue Diver certification and have another 19 dives to go before I reach the DiveMaster level.

You will recall last September/October I went to China for a couple of weeks with my brother Jimbo and his wife Shelly to pickup their 2nd adopted Chinese daughter, Aili Grace. That turned out to be a great trip. We got to spend a week in the interior of rural China which is something that has been on my list of to do's for many years. We spent another week hitting some of the bigger places in China as well. Aili is an incredible beautiful and regal looking baby girl. We got to see her again in Chicago over New Years and she is really thriving in her new family environment.

We married off our youngest daughter, Yanin at a beautiful wedding the week before Christmas. They spent Christmas honeymooning at one of the Sandals all inclusive resorts in St Lucia in the Caribbean. Yanin and Justin met while she was in high school and have been engaged for the past 6 years. She graduated in May from the University of Houston with a BS in Psychology and has been managing a gymnastics academy for the past couple years. Yanin's husband Justin is a computer network engineer working for 2nd Baptist Church here in Houston. They are off to a wonderful start in life and make a wonderful couple.

My son Chris finished his battlefield triage training with the Marines at Camp LeJuene, NC in December and was home for the wedding and Christmas holidays. Then we went to Chicago over the New Years holidays to visit with the grandkids. Chris left from Chicago to spend the next year at a new Naval Hospital in Portsmouth, VA. Chris will be getting 60 hours of college accredited Lab Tech training crammed into the next 6 months and then spend another 6 months at the Naval Hospital Lab doing his practicals. He has been getting honors in all of his classes and is doing extremely well in that structured and disciplined environment.

I have a giant 50th birthday party with over 70 people coming up this Saturday and it will be a true celebration of life. The party has a Mexican theme and Justin will have a Margarita machine and kegs of our favorite Texas brew, Shiner Bock beer going out by the pool. I suggested the party invitations go out with a side quote of "WOW, for a while there he was iffy, but now he's turning fifty!"

Next month we go to Salt Lake with some friends for the Olympics. We have tickets to three events; couples figure skating, short track speed skating and the giant ski jump at Park City. We will also spend a couple of days skiing the Little Cottonwood Canyons while we are there.

Sorry to hear the news about Kim Denton passing. Fifty seems to young for our group to be passing on. Hope I can keep the grime reaper from coming around to visit me for a while. I know he is looking for me, but so far I have managed to duck around the corner more than twice to escape his clutches. The way I look at it, is I am living on borrowed time so I might as well enjoy myself. I do keep a watch over my shoulder though so I can try and figure out when he's coming again. Let me know if you hear him heading this way. Thanks."

Paul Royer

News from Carol Skoczek Royer and Paul Royer, "Gary, thanks for keeping me and everyone else up-to-date with all the news from our fellow classmates. I am hoping we can make the reunion this year. Paul hates crowds, but I'll work on him to come and have fun. You would like info regarding the Royers. We have three children. Colleen is 25 and lives in Madison & works for FLAD an architectural design company. Corin is 23 and works for VW corporation until she can make enough money to live in a climate where there is NO snow! Our son, Nathan - 22, is still attending Columbia College in Chicago. He tells us he has about one and a half more years to go. His major is digital photography. Paul is still fortunate to be working at Motorola. Me, I have the ideal job. I work out of my home in the morning, then go into the school, down the block, and watch about 135 kids each week. I run the before and afterschool daycare for the working parents in our school district. I'm left alone to plan the activities. :o) In a couple of years, we just might become snowbirds. For those of you who remember Paul, he still runs! Skinny as can be. Add a mustache to his school picture. Me, I'm working on being skinny. (life long project)"

"I would like to wish you the best in the coming year. I could relate to some of the challenges you are dealing with. I saw the notice for the next homecoming, I will be putting that in the planning hopper for the year. My brother Martin Papanek ( ' 71) said the last one was a good time. We had gone back in the spring to take of some things and visit with Dennis Brauer's family. Our son Eric has gone to Montana and is staying with my other brother Steven. Eric has kept my wife an I on our toes since he was 14. He's working and getting a taste of real life. I would of liked for him to continue going to school, but he is very independent minded, doesn't like to listen to anyone, ( can't imagine where he got that from ) and wanted some adventure. I scanned this picture from the one yearbook I have, the Class of  1967 year. This would of been our sophomore year, but I was put in the freshmen class next to my brother Steve. Well that's about all I can say for now. Wish everybody the best and hoping to see a few friends later on down the road."  Dennis Papanek

01/01/2002   Several more names have been added to the missing list, due to the number of classmates, without or with unknown e-mail address, that have moved since last year's newsletter mailing.  I had 23 newsletters returned as undeliverable or addressee unknown, and several more that were returned with forwarding addresses that were re-sent.
