12/31/2006 Rick Ladd Rick Ladd send along his Christmas Newsletter

Christmas 2006

2006 was quite a year for our family.  Back in March Cindy and I received a phone call at 1AM from Job.  Seems that he and his girlfriend Brooke had decided to get married… that afternoon!    Three days earlier we had talked with him and the possibility of a marriage never came up.  So, we asked when they came to this momentous decision.  They said it came to them earlier in the day and that they had intended to call us earlier in the day but got distracted and forgot.  So they called at 1 AM compelled to let us know as soon as possible.  It seems they both knew the other was “the one” so it just seemed the thing to do.  They got married in Sedona, Arizona the next afternoon.  We have only spoken to her on the phone a few times, but she seems to be every bit as much a “free spirit” as Job.  Scary thought, I know.

Joshua has graduated from Arizona State University with a degree in finance.  It seemed like a long time coming as his deployment to Iraq extended the process a year and a half.  But he graduated magna cum laude so the interruption did not have an adverse affect on his motivation.  He remains in the Army Reserve and has not eliminated full time Army from his considerations.  Currently he is working for a contractor in Phoenix and is learning the ins and outs of running a small business and enjoys it immensely.  The sad news is that his girlfriend of a couple of years broke off their relationship which was an unexpected blow.  The good news is he has recovered from the disappointment and is cultivating a new friendship.  Time will tell.

Jeremiah and Erica bought a house just three doors down and across the street from us.  So while Josh and Job live in the Phoenix area we get to see Jer & Er regularly.  The bad news is our grocery bill has gone up noticeably. Erica has completed her teaching certification and is only a few credits short of her Masters which she hopes to wrap up this summer.  She has accomplished this while teaching a bi-lingual kindergarten in Kenosha.  Jeremiah is working for a computer programming firm in Milwaukee. Interestingly, he did not like his programming classes in college, but loves the work he is doing now.  He is planning on working toward his Masters as well, but not until current college loans are all paid off.

Light the Night Walk

This will be the 6th year Team CBSi will partake in the Light the Night Walk for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. In that time we have gone from $5,000 the first year to $50,000 last year. Team CBSi has become the top money maker in Naperville. We all believe Val is still doing good.

This is a cause that was very close to Valerie’s heart and she was able to participate the first year. The remaining years we have walked “Remembering Valerie”.

This year’s walk is Thursday, September 28, 2006 on the Naperville River Walk. A nice 2 mile stroll along the river. The walk starts at 7pm and lasts till about 9. Team CBSi will have a tent and a banner “Remembering Valerie”. Everyone is welcome to join us.

If you can’t walk and would like to contribute, checks made out to “Leukemia and Lymphoma Society” (tax deductible) can be sent to me, or go to www.lightthenight.org/il to donate on-line. Just remember to enter Team CBSi so we get credit for the donation. Last year the Naperville walk was the highest money maker in Illinois and we certainly want to continue that tradition.
Thank you for your support

I wanted let anyone who lived in the New York City area the my daughter's dance company, Red Shift Dance, will have its premiere performances April 20 through April 22, 2006. The company is the creation of my daughter Kelly and her friend Katy, a dancer with whom she has been performing and studying off and on since high school. More information is available at www.redshiftdance.com, the company's website.  When you visit the website, Kelly is on the left in the first picture you see and Katy is on the right. Thanks for posting this info for me and I look forward to seeing anyone who is able to attend the performances.

03/11/2006 Nancy Turley

Proud mom, Nancy Turley Santay, just wanted to let us all know how proud she and her husband Tim are of their son Tom who is winning an Emmy!  The following article is from the Blowing Rock newspaper...

Blowing Rock Filmmaker
Wins 2006 Emmy Award
Tom Santay Will Travel To Los Angeles For Honor From
The Academy Of Television Arts And Sciences

“You can take the boy from Blowing Rock, but you can’t take Blowing Rock from the boy.” That’s the quote from Tom Santay’s Small Town Guys of Blowing Rock calendar page.
The statement rings true later this month when The Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (better known as The Emmys) take Tom out of Blowing Rock to present him with a College Television Award in Hollywood.
“Woodrow Wilson”, produced by Santay, won second place in the comedy category of the national competition which found talented filmmakers from across the nation submitting their work to the toughest judges in the world.
The College Television Awards is a major TV Academy Foundation competition which recognizes excellence in college student film/video productions, providing industry recognition for outstanding student-produced films and videos. Entries are accepted in various categories from scores of colleges and universities each year.
Winners will be honored at a gala and festival in Los Angeles on March 19-20.
Santay graduated with a degree in Filmmaking from the North Carolina School of the Arts in Winston-Salem in May of 2005. “Woodrow Wilson” was produced by Santay as his senior thesis film. Written and directed by classmate Ryan Hunter of Charlotte, “Woodrow Wilson” is a dark comedy about two disillusioned high school seniors that play a prank on freshman students by concocting a placebo ‘drug’ made from scratch and sniff stickers. The would-be drug is called “Woodrow Wilson” and the unsuspecting freshman ‘users’ quickly become the coolest kids in school. Word spread about the new designer drug, and its not long before everyone in town is hooked on “Woodrow”...
There’s just one catch... the drug isn’t real!
Santay says that the most challenging part of working on this project was finding a high school that would allow his cast and crew total access for roughly one week of shooting time. Another difficulty was finding a location that was comfortable with filming a script that dealt with drugs, even fake ones. Santay lucked ut when he found a school that saw the humor in the story.
“I had to convince a lot of people to see the big picture and not the minor details” said Santay. “Over 100 kids from local high schools were used as extras in the film. I found that getting to know them was a highly enjoyable process. I still hear from some of them today.”
A 2001 graduate of Watauga High School, Santa’s interest in video and film production flourished under the guidance of the Technology Department faculty, winning an award for the high school in a state-wide competition for video technology students. Midway through college at NCSA, Tom Santay began producing projects for several High Country businesses and could frequently be seen around town shooting with a film crew at various locations.
His local credits include work for Chetola Resort, The Village Inns of Blowing Rock, Bear Creek of Linville, The Blowing Rock TDA, the Blowing Rock Attraction, as well as numerous other hospitality and tourism related businesses and merchants.
Santay is the son of Tim and Nancy Santay, owners of Cabin Fever Rustic Furnishings on Blowing Rock’s North Main Street.
When asked what winning the College Television Award means to him, Santay stated: “To be recognized for what you’ve helped to create is always rewarding. I knew this project was special when I first read the script. Our entire creative team had faith in the film. Being rewarded for that faith is the most a producer can ask for. It means I’m on the right path and it means I need to keep going. It means that I did my job.”
The College Television Awards Festival takes place during the gala awards weekend at the Academy’s Goldenson Theatre, where winning productions will be screened following a black tie dinner attended by more than 400 industry people including Academy members and governors, students, academics and the press. One aim of the competition is to give these outstanding student works exposure to the television and film industry and to other students and faculty nationwide. The award is comprised of a cash prize of $1,000 and a supply of film stock from Kodak, a fellow sponsor of the competition.
Santay's production is currently making the rounds on the film festival circuit. “Woodrow Wilson” was selected for screening at FESTCINE, an International Universities Film Festival held simultaneously February 28 through March 3 at New York University and in Spain at University of Leon. This year’s only entry from the North Carolina School of the Arts, “Woodrow” will screen at the River Run International Film Festival in Winston-Salem March 16-19.
The North Carolina School of the Arts has laid claim to the cash and film stock winnings, however Santay values the networking opportunity that the trip to Los Angeles will provide as a prize in itself!

Hey gang!

As many of you know, our business has been expanding and growing very fast. At times, it almost seems overwhelming. But it is always interesting!!! For many years now we have been installing vehicle "WRAPS". This involves completely wrapping a vehicle using a High Performance Vinyl. When finished, It looks almost as good as a new paint job!  Now we have the ability to Design and Manufacture these ourselves. Our latest large format printer has been on-line and working almost nonstop since it went online last year. Here is one of our latest jobs that will be on display at the 2006 CHICAGO AUTO SHOW in February.  It started out life as white VW Golf GTI. When we finished, it was a Yellow VW.  I was very impressed with my crew, I think they did an outstanding job. So, I thought I would share this with all my friends, family, and people I don't even know!!! If you follow this link   http://www.suburbanaccents.com/wrap.htm  You can see a sampling of some of the wraps we have been doing lately. For those with High Speed connections, if you click on the "FLAME" at the bottom of the page, it will download a 3MB Mini movie to follow it's progress of this VW job. (pretty neat stuff)

Thanks, Love you all...
01/27/2006 Chris Christman News from Chris Christman:

Been a long time. I was just amazed to see that you still maintain the website. Thought I’d take a moment to give you an update. As you may recall from when last we spoke, I’ve been in the transportation industry for the last 15 years. Well all the hard work and long hours have finally paid off. I now own a company called Network Paratransit Systems, Inc. located in San Bernardino, California, and am very proud to announce that we have become the largest Taxi Cab Co. in both San Bernardino and Riverside Counties.  I currently reside in Spring Valley Lake, a small community within the city of Victorville in what is called the High Desert. Our lake is man made but offers 7 miles of shoreline and is large enough for powerboats, jet skies, fishing and swimming. I have a daughter graduating from the U C Davis this June and a son who just left for the Persian Gulf for the SECOND time aboard the U S Navy’s newest and baddest Air Craft Carrier, the Ronald Regan. He works on the flight deck 12 hours a day when the birds are airborne. A very dangerous way to make a living.  Any way, if you have the time, give me a call or an E-mail and we’ll swap war stories and such. I’ve got a few questions regarding some OLD friends and yourself of course.

01/22/2006 Chris Kirkendall Chris Kirkendall wanted to alert us of another Donna Matrix event.  For those of you that don't know Chris and his sister Donna (Hersey '70) are in a band together...you guessed it, the band's name is "Donna Matrix"  They will be playing at the Lamplighter Inn in Palatine on Saturday, January 28 starting at 10:00pm.  Here is a copy of the flyer:

01/14/2006 Mary Droegemueller

Greetings for 2006 from Mary Droegemueller.    I received the WHS Christmas letter yesterday and it was great to be updated on all the news.  I am glad to hear that your health is good.  I need to update you with my new name and address.  I married Lee Eaton on 12/29/2002 and we currently live at 3223 College Dr., Carson City, NV 89703.  Home phone is 775-887-0671. My e-mail address is maryeaton888@msn.com.   Thank you for you extensive efforts to keep all the Wildcats connected.  The web site is wonderful.  I am the Chief Nurse for Nevada's Department of Corrections.  Lee is a juvenile probation officer for troubled teens in the South lake Tahoe community.  He commutes to South Lake Tahoe, CA everyday (about 35 miles),  We are remodeling a house up there and will relocate to our new spot this year. Hope all continues on a positive road for your family in 2006.  A photo of Lee and me with our two grandchildren, Leah and Tyler, in Disneyland this year. Take care,

01/10/2006 David Digeronimo being the hearty soul that he is, sent this picture of himself taken in November of 1970:

I think we all looked something like that in 1970 :-)

01/09/2006 Rick Ladd 2005 is behind us with all it’s ups and downs and the New Year before us offers hope of bigger and brighter tomorrows. Our thoughts for you are that 2006 will be a prosperous and happy one for you and yours.

Job experienced a job change by moving from a UPS Store to DHL customer service. It is a little bit more money but most significant is he now has health care benefits. He was part of a band that enjoyed some success and he enjoyed that immensely. He has not yet, however, found that niche that has him focused on a long term future. This is not a cause for concern with him though! He truly lives the “one day’s trouble is enough for one day”. He has spoken of a move to Colorado but the purpose is still foggy to us. Only time will tell. There was a relationship with a delightful young lady, but she was looking for a commitment Job was not ready to make. A new female friend is present whom we have yet to meet. About all we know is that she is a cutie. Go figure!

Joshua has returned from Iraq. It was great to have him and Job home for Christmas. Josh is very positive about his experience in Iraq and our mission there. He has a unique perspective as he traveled all over the country and was able to be in on a number of high level briefing that people of his rank are not generally a part of due to his specific responsibilities. Now that he has returned he is looking forward to completing his senior year at Arizona State. It will not be a cake walk as he has 16 class credit courses for both semesters. But he has maintained a 3.85 gpa so he is confident of doing well. He is thinking about law school after graduation to pursue corporate law. And he has said he will probably “re-up” his Reserve commitment as well. The Army experience has been very good for him and he has voiced some lofty and patriotic goals for continued military service. Katie is a bigger part of his life than ever. He acknowledged that they have spoken of marriage down the road after he graduates. What a revelation! Why is it that the guy is the last one to admit what all the rest of us have known for a long time? She is a sweetheart and we look forward to her being our next daughter-in-law.

It was indeed a big year for Jeremiah! He married his long time friend turned sweetheart Erica. They have a nice little (cute) apartment here in Racine. Erica is a kindergarten teacher in Kenosha. It is a class of second language youngsters and she loves it. She is in a special program through Kenosha Unified that will complete her certification requirements and result in her masters. It is challenging to teach and study full time but she is doing very well.

Jeremiah is working for a computer programming company located in Milwaukee. They design customized programming for their clients as well as their own general application designs. Jeremiah is part of a team that writes a program then works out all the “bugs” for final release. He wants to continue his education but has decided that current college loans need to be paid off first. They have made us grandparents of a sort. They recently acquired a puppy that is a rat terrier Italian greyhound mix. They call him Mico which is Italian for friend, He is a cutie and looks up to Magnus as a big brother! Magnus was a little jealous at first but now they are buddies.

Cindy makes me proud. She is about 75% of the way to obtaining her bachelors degree! She is determined and hard working. She figures that about two more years effort will pay off and she will be able to become a full fledged teacher. In the meantime she continues as a teaching assistant working with an autistic boy who is making great strides. This will be her last year with him so new challenges await her later next school year. She went into a cooking frenzy this Christmas as Job and Joshua came home to make our holiday time truly special! All the boys got their favorite dinners during the course of their visit.

It has been a challenging year for me. I have been seeking gainful employment since May. My pension keeps us going but we need additional regular income to make progress in our debt retirement program. I am waiting to hear latter this week on two prospects and hope to be working again soon. Christmas was bittersweet this year. As noted the boys were all home and that was great. But just before Christmas a good friend from the police department died suddenly and unexpectedly. It was sorrowful and a lesson in taking the good with the bad. I have been able to enjoy daily visits to the local dog park with Magnus and his girlfriend Lady (as well as Mico when I supply doggie daycare). The honey-do list is unending so boredom is not a problem.

We would love to hear from you so drop us a line when you can!

Best Wishes,
Rick & Cindy Ladd

Patty Harrington Follett, and her alumni-husband Glen Follett '67, suffered a tragic loss just before Christmas. Their 36 year old daughter Christine died. Glenn and Patty sent this message of thanks along to share with all of you:
A note to all of our old classmates, friends, and the Bomber's. As many of you have told us there are no words that can ease the pain of our horrible loss. We want you to know that there are no words to describe what we are feel about the support and concern you have given to us.

From Alaska to California, from Florida to New York, and all points in between we've received expressions of your sympathy and a sincere and a sincere desire to ease our pain. Some came to our door personally, which had to be very difficult for them. Some traveled more than four hours to attend Christine's service. Some of you we've known since grade school. Most of you we've only had the opportunity to share time briefly with in over thirty-five years.

Our life and our view of life have changed so much in only a few hours. It would be easy to be bitter and angry about this terrible tragedy that we have fallen victim to, but you have reminded us that although tragedy and heartbreak grab the headlines and our collective attention, they are a very small part of life. You have helped remind us of all the love, the compassion, the sharing, and the charity that the world is really made of.

To say thanks you would be an insult to the warmth and the appreciation that we feel for all you've done. Please know that you've made a big difference.

God Bless You All,
Patty and Glen Follett
