WHS Class of 1969 alumni honored by the Texas State Board of Education

Longtime NISD volunteer named a Texas Hero for Children
September 23, 2014

Dave Gannon, a longtime volunteer and mentor at NISD schools, was honored as a Hero for Children by the State Board of Education (SBOE).

Last year, Gannon mentored students at Business Careers HS, Leon Valley, Linton, Helotes, and Los Reyes elementary schools. For more than 20 years, Gannon has been a NISD mentor for hundreds of students in all grade levels, served on numerous campus and district-level committees, and worked in different leadership roles with the Northside Education Foundation (NEF).

He was among 15 Texans honored by the SBOE this year. Honorees were recognized for volunteering their time, talents, and skills to help improve the public schools in their communities. They each received a certificate of honor, a copy of the resolution scheduled for board approval, photographs commemorating the ceremony, and his or her name will be engraved on a plaque that is permanently displayed at the TEA.

“I continue to mentor because experience has convinced me that our students derive significant benefits from one-on-one interaction with adults who stimulate their imagination, expand their horizons, and provide meaningful, effective, and consistent role models,” Gannon said. “Recognitions like this just continue to reinforce those convictions.”
