(I've moved to 2601 N Indian River Drive, Apt. 1 - Fort Pierce, FL 34946) My oldest son Carson is doing well and has left ABC and taken a job in Washington, DC as Senator Bob Graham's deputy communication director. Although Graham is no longer in the presidential race, still hoping he could get picked up as the Democratic vice-presidential pick. My younger son Tyler is working with at-risk kids in an Americorp program, so I am really experiencing empty nest syndrome this past year. I was a pretty active single-parent throughout their junior high, high school, and college years, so I do miss having them around, although my high school students do keep me busy. Also, I completed writing 60 lesson plans via a web site for educators on the Holocaust last year. (You can log on at www.holocaust.hklaw.com - click on teacher resource guide and provide a user ID) The lesson plans are in conjunction with an annual writing contest and scholarship program for high school students, so any teachers may be interested in passing on the information for their students. I can help you with my sister Barb's address also. She is married and living in Montana - near Yellowstone National Park - teaching junior high. Her address is as follows: Barbara Robinson, 514 East Lewis, Livingston, MT 59047. Hope to make it back to Wheeling one of these years, but it is hard to get away during the school year. Take Care! Peggy Daley competed in the
Chicago Marathon on October 11th. She missed attending Homecoming,
but sent this note about her run in the marathon: "To all....The Chicago Marathon was a six hour Marathon. T he weather was 50 when we started and about 70 when we finished but NO HUMIDITY! The cutoff date of 41,000 entries was August 21. There were 32,500 runners who completed the Marathon. The male winner's time was 2 hours and 5 minutes. The female winner's time was 2 hours 23 minutes. My goal was to complete it in six hours and 20 minutes which would have been a personal record (PR) for me. My official time was 6 hours and 56 minutes. Out of the 32,500 people who finished the Marathon, I placed 32,283. Carol, from my running group, will tell you I know no strangers as I would talk to everyone and find out where they were from, how many Marathons, etc. on and off the Marathon course. And for those of you who know me outside of Saturday morning runs, my earrings started some of those conversations. BUT I went to Chicago to Finish and have fun -- both of which I did. I didn't set a PR but I took in the sites and smelled the scents of Chicago in all the different neighborhoods including the chocolate factory -- TWICE!!!! They were all WONDERFUL! I was staying on the 6 hour pace through the four mile marker (or was that the five mile marker??) but knew I would not make it in the 6 hour time limit when I saw a young woman with IT band problems (pain outside of knee) in severe pain with each step and stopped to help her. After helping her stretch and talking with her, I ran ahead to get her some first aid help and finally found someone who went back to find her. Right before the 10 miles, there was another younger girl crying and saying she was sick and couldn't make it. I walked with her for a few minutes and talked with her to encourage her to make it to the next water stop and get help..I hope she stopped at the next aid station. There was a couple whose wife had pain in both of her heals and arches - I gave her my last two advils. She was so grateful. And out of 31,500 runners who finished the Marathon, around the half way mark, I hooked up with a runner named Bobbie from Dallas and we helped each other make it to the Finish Line together. I introduced her to Biofreeze (similar to Bengay but much better) which she thought was a miracle. Oh, within five minutes of meeting Bobbie, I found out where she worked, she found out I was unemployed and told me to send her my resume..no promises!! At this point, we didn't know anything about each other. Who would think of finding a prospective employer on the Marathon route! Even if I don't get a job with her company, I made a lifelong friend and Biofreeze made another customer... In short, I took in the sites, smells and people of Chicago while completing a Marathon. I always believe that things happen for a reason and people are brought into your life for a reason. I was meant to be in Chicago.... Thank you all for your support and encouragement through my training...Luv Ya, Peggy" |

Bobbie Kopp Lamonica-Lafloer has a new address, but is still in
Park Ridge, IL. Bobbie wanted to pass along this update: Home coming w/e was the same as parents w/e at Eastern Illinois which is where my son (the baby) is going to school. We are suffering from empty nest syndrome. Did i say suffering, I meant savoring . My middle child is back to school in Paris and won't be home until Christmas .. My older daughter has informed me that she has finally set a wedding date of august next year so her sister and brother can stand up before they go back to school. Somewhere in my future is boredom, I just know it . I think a little boredom would be good , but I believe it is the stress that keeps our hearts ticking.... Don't all nurses live on stress ? I keep waiting for all those stress management classes to kick in. Hmm... Case management is Interesting and I enjoy the university setting. I work with some of the best neurosurgeons in the country.. Retirement is a long way off. I really am looking forward to coming to a reunion Bobbie Kopp Lamonica-Lafloer |

News from Sandra McQueen. "Hi Gary.......I have received letters
from you in the mail. I moved to Colorado in 1981. Have not kept in
touch with any of our school mates. Will be unable to attend our hs
reunion or homecoming. I usually go back home at the end of August but
not this year. Enjoyed hearing from you. I believe it was our 10 yr
reunion that I attended and there was a shooting next to the room we
were in......we all had to hit the floor! ... I never missed a football or basketball game. Never dated any classmates. I was into saving the world........ Moved to co in 1981 to get married. That lasted until 1996. My family wanted us to move back home, but I enjoy the mountains and it would be hard to leave plus I have a daughter who is 26, and have 2 beautiful grand kids, 2 boys. One is 7 years old and the other is 3 months old.....both boys. Would be hard to leave them. Just a quick note to say hi and the years sure pass quickly........enjoy........... |

DIAMONDS
ARE FOREVER: Dad Bill Sefton, displaying one of the "Valerie rings," says of his late daughter: "Her personality was very sparkling, full of life."- Rick D'Elia March 2, 2003 -- She sparkled in life, and now she sparkles in death. When Valerie Sefton died last year, her father decided to make a lasting memorial for her - by having her remains turned into diamonds. "It's tremendous," said her father, Bill Sefton, 51. "I can look at the ring, and it gives me a good feeling. I can't say that about looking at the ashes - that's a very hard thing." Valerie, who died Sept. 10, is the first person whose family is known to have paid to have their loved one's remains turned into diamonds, giving them precious keepsakes to remember her by. LifeGem, a Chicago-based company, turns the cremated remains of people and pets into diamonds by extracting the carbon in their ashes, then heating and pressing it at extreme temperatures - similar to the natural process that turns carbon into diamonds. Sefton, a Scottsdale, Ariz., businessman, heard about LifeGem on television. He and his wife, Becky Sefton, knew right away it would be a perfect way to remember Valerie. "Her personality was very sparkling, full of life," said her proud father. His daughter was diagnosed with Hodgkin's disease when she was 22, having just graduated from college. She was looking forward to a career in early-childhood development. She struggled with the disease for five years, never giving up hope, said her father, who likened her strength to that of the diamond. "If you had talked to Valerie through this period of time, if you didn't know she was sick, you would never have guessed it," said Sefton. "Her attitude was incredible." He wears a ring with a half-carat diamond, costing around $5,000. It is set in a band of white and yellow gold, along with six smaller, regular diamonds, which he wears on the ring finger of his left hand around the clock. The family had five additional stones made, costing around $2,300 each. "My wife and I have already got our rings done," he said. "Valerie's mother, my ex-wife, Christine (Aberle), will also be doing a ring, and Valerie's sister, Tracey, will have a necklace, I believe." There is an extra diamond for Bill's sister, Kathy Rinna, and one for Valerie's niece, 3-year-old Tracey McElmeel. "She will be given that sometime later - probably when she graduates from high school," Bill said. "Then she can decide what she wants to do with it." |

01/06/2003 | News from Bobbie Kopp LaMonica-Lafloer. Bobbie has this to share, "...With one in college in Paris (soon to return from winter break to finish this year) and getting the next one 's applications & finances done I am very busy. The up side is next year it will be empty nest time. I will miss them terribly (as the phone bills to Paris show ) but I am looking forward to all the freedom. Dinners out, peace and quite. I don't think I notified you, I remarried in March . My new husband is from Germany . I am going to start hyphenating my name to break them in gradually ( it is Lafloer) I see a lot of travel in my future . If I remember correctly you traveled first then had children. I had children and have started to travel now. That is how Lia ended up in Paris . She went to Austria last New Years with us and she wanted to fly out of Paris. When she came back she was hooked. For HS graduation I gave her a month in Europe to broaden her horizons. I didn't think they would broaden quite so far . But, I am glad for her. She plans on finishing in Paris the next 2 years . Have no acceptance on the younger one Nick, but we're hoping for Marquette or Bradley . With his GPA it will be a miracle , but I have faith.. The older one who will be 30 in March is doing mortgages and loves it .(Tammi). That's in lieu of a Christmas letter. My husband got a new digital camera for Christmas so hopefully there will be pictures of my 51st. Yes I still go by Bobbie .The only one who calls me Roberta is my father . Hope your New Years was good . I am trying to get info on Pam Pasarella, she is married and lives in Las Vegas" | |||
